Great Danes Youth Football Club provides coaching and League participation for age groups Under 6 to Under 21 year in both mini-soccer and 11-a-side football, playing in the Chelmsford Youth Football League and The Chelmsford Under 21 League.
Great Danes was established in 1971 with just one team at Under 13. It was formed from local boys based around Danes Way in Pilgrims Hatch and, for a period in the early days, there was a Great Dane dog name 'Blue' as club mascot. As the club grew it moved around Brentwood playing at Beads Hall Lane, Bishops Hall Park, Burland Road (now Brentwood Place) before settling at their current location in 1986.
In 1996 the club formed an alliance with The Hedley Walter School (now Sawyers Hall College) and Brentwood Hockey Club and together obtained a Sports Lottery Grant and applied for funding to build an Astroturf facility. The application was a success and the facility was completed in 1998 and is enjoyed by many sporting organisations throughout Essex.
The club is well run and continues to grow, fielding 25 teams across all age groups this season in addition to the open coaching sessions for those aged under 6, offering them excellent match and training facilities. Each team’s manager or assistant has completed a coaching course and the Club is proud to have been awarded FA Charter Standard status.
